The FOM Institute for Plasma Physics Rijnhuizen in Nieuwegein is very active in the transfer of scientific results to the public domain and the application as new technology, i.e. valorisation. There are several industrial collaboration projects for material science that enabled special multilayer optics in next generation lithography for the production of integrated circuits. The research, partially funded by international industry, including ASML and Carl Zeiss SMT AG, results an annual two patents on average, next to the scientific publications.
Rijnhuizen also houses Magnum-PSI, a facility that is currently being build and will be unique in the world, contributing to the development of materials for the ITER fusion reactor. It offers new experimental possibilities for plasma-surface interaction research. Rijnhuizen actively participates in the international ITER project. Via ITER-NL, contacts are established with over 200 Dutch companies, of which several dozen are involved in the development of essential components. The seminar will address examples and scientific results of several projects.
