On 6 May 2010, the leading US stock indices, including the S&P 500, Dow Jones and Nasdaq, experienced a brief, but severe drop in prices, falling more than 5% in a matter of minutes. Although these market indices managed to partially recover that same day, the flash crash erased almost $1 trillion in market value.
